Mansions & Castles Adventure
Ontario County is blessed with a history that walks you back through time into an era of beautiful gardens, grand Mansions with a focus on art and the finer things in life. Your journey through our county will plunge you deeply into a portion of the arts world you may never have taken time to visit. TIME is the key word, our wish for you is that you will take the time to experience an authentic journey where you take time to sit on our front porches while you enjoy a cup of tea and a memorable conversation … enjoy dinner, taste wine or simply watch the world go by …for just a moment!
Arrival Day: We will plan on your mid-day arrival in Canandaigua and start with a tour at the Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park where you can enjoy nine themed gardens within the 52 acres of the original Fredrick Ferris Thompson Estate dating back to 1863. After you wander through the gardens, you will be served tea on the mansion porch. From there our next stop is the Granger Homestead and Carriage Museum. The Mansion at Granger Homestead is filled with Tiffany Chandeliers and the collection of tea cups and china that will give you a glimpse into the elegance of dining in the 1800’s. Nearly 70 horse drawn carriages are on display completing your journey into the past … you can even take a carriage ride to top off the day!
Check in at the Inn on The Lake, freshen up and enjoy a tour and tasting at the New York Wine and Culinary Center. Filled with works from local artist this amazing setting will give you a look at both the culture and agriculture of the region. Enjoy dinner at the Holloway House, an 1808 Wayside Tavern before returning to the hotel. The evening is yours to lounge on the porch by the lake and enjoy the serenity.
Day Two: After a great night’s sleep and a full breakfast, our first stop of the day will be the famous Rose Hill Mansion, which is a National Historic Landmark and is considered one of the finest examples of Greek Revival Architecture in the United States. Built in 1839, the mansion has 26 rooms, of which 21 are furnished in the then-popular Empire style and filled with glass, art and an amazing porch or two! You will have time to shop prior to lunch on your own at Belhurst Castle, a dining experience you’re sure to remember, weather permitting you can take advantage of the porch area for dining. Make sure to ask the staff about the history and unique stories that surround the Castle.
After lunch we’ll travel back to Canandaigua and enjoy free time on Main Street visiting such places as the Pat Rini-Rohrer Gallery with a collection of contemporary fine art, photography, sculpture, glass works and much more. You won’t want to miss Nadal Glass, a working glass studio and retail gallery where you can watch glass blowers’ work. While you’re strolling Main Street, don’t pass up the opportunity to indulge yourself with a visit to Sweet Expressions, the area’s sweetest temptation. Dinner this evening will be aboard the Canandaigua Lady or on the porch at Steamboat Landing.
Day Three: After breakfast and on your way home, we have an antique shop or two for you to visit before we send you off with amazing memories of an Authentic American Journey!
We’re glad you came and … we can’t wait to see you again!
